Oh, Nancy! Your boots are certainly made for walking….
Oh, Nancy! Your boots are certainly made for walking….
The Hon, Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has effectively (well, not that effectively) been pretty much put in charge of the Trillion dollar stimulus package currently before Congress.
I am not too happy about that, in fact I’m not sure I would be happy if she was in charge of my local 7-Eleven or looking after my cats for a weekend. Having said that, how do you feel that the Speaker, of all people, (remember, in terms of the order of Presidential Succession, after Biden… she’s it) thinks we cannot ‘go fast enough’ with the economic recovery package or 500 million Americans will lose their jobs by the end of February. However, The US Census Bureau confirms American has a population of approx 305 million. I am wondering where the other 200 million are. Any ideas? Citizens who have moved overseas perhaps? Unborn children? Maybe she misspoke just like Barack Obama during the campaign last year– and this is a direct quote:
“…over the last 15 months, we have travelled to every corner of the United States. I’ve now been in uh 57 States, I think, one left to go. Alaska and Hawaii but was not allowed to go to ‘cause I really wanted to visit but my staff would not justify it.”
Huh?? His staff would not allow it and he’s running for President? What happened to DNC Chair’s Howard “Yeehah” Dean’s fifty state strategy. Let me get this straight, he thinks there are 57 States in the Union then one State becomes two and those two (or one) are his home State of Hawaii and Gov. Palin and former GOP VP candidate’s State of Alaska? Maybe Team Obama’s new hot shot White Staff can present the President with a one line memo on how many States there are in these United States of America of which he is now President of and that Alaska and Hawaii constitute two States and not one (on his Blackberry – then he’d be sure to read it).
Back to the Speaker of the House. She is, not perhaps the sharpest knife in the drawer but she’s a woman so we’ll let that slide. However cast your mind back to last year when the first bailout package was proposed and we witnessed Palosi’s ill timed bile and rant on the eve on the Bill against the GOP which was totally uncalled for.
Speaker Pelosi blames the Republicans for just about everything (and I am the first to admit the Republican Party need to get a huge mirror and take a look in it- after November 4th I think they just might be).The Speaker therefore effectively killed off any hope of bipartisanship whilst neglecting to mention that 40 per cent of her own Democratic lot voted against it.
Of course they now have the majority in the House and Senate so it will be interesting to note how some of the Senators, including Jim Webb of Virginia, who have been vocal with their concerns on this stimulus package, really feel about the pork barreling and nonsense in the Bill which have nothing to do with job creation or getting the banks back on track and sorting out the housing industry.
In a letter to the Senate Finance Committee, Webb said every $1 billion spent on construction and maintenance work would generate 35,000 to 42,000 jobs. Fair enough, most Americans agree something ‘has to be done’. But what about all the items tagged onto the Bill? What does adding $200 million on for contraceptives have to do with creating jobs? Then there are the health care and education additions which are, of course ‘Good Democratic Policies’ and I know they have been waiting a long time for an excuse to rush this through to appeal to their base but there is time for consideration of such legislation and should therefore be separate from this Bill.
Rush Limbaugh calls it ‘porkulus’. As he said recently in the Wall Street Journal, it’s important to remember that this is the people’s money – our money – not Washington’s.
Why not seriously consider some tax cuts? We all know the effect tax cuts, both personal and corporate, have on our economy and are probably the surest way to bring an economy back from recession. Even two professors at UCLA concluded several years ago that Roosevelt’s policies prolonged the Great Depression by at least 7 years unnecessarily. Memo to Nancy: – bone up on your New Deal history and what really happened. Yes, you are the first female Speaker but that’s really the only reason you are there.
According to a new poll by Rasmussen, most Americans are skeptical all round and 59% fear that Congress and the new President will increase Government spending too much. By contrast, only 17% worry they will cut taxes too much. I hope the Republicans in Congress are listening and vote and act accordingly.
My local Congressman, Republican House Whip, Eric Cantor, who also serves on the all powerful Ways and Means Committee recently proposed, in a White House round table meeting with Obama, a moderate tax cut plan as perhaps part of a solution to our current economic situation. The President responded with ‘I won; I’m going to trump you on that’. Nice.
As I write, Press Secretary Gibbs is saying that the President is reaching out to people with ideas who can strengthen the ‘stimulus package’. Guess that doesn’t include moderate tax cuts Eric, maybe you should move to Maine and join moderate Republican Senators Snow & Collins.
The Bill will no doubt pass, however to what end? Nancy is all smiles and thinks this Trojan horse is a great result for all the Left and to some extent it probably is. For a wee bit, and then what?
When this nation is well and truly bankrupt, who picks up the pieces Nancy?

On the whole, I am not very fond of politics in general – but, on occasion all of us have to pause for thought. There are a few very good issues raised here, and I’m thinking about it deeply – I am grateful to you.

The Democrats don’t create jobs The Republicans don’t create jobs The government doesn’t create jobs The PRIVATE SECTOR creates jobs. The only thing the first three have to do Is LOWER TAXES

If the Tea Party is a Drive and not a Party, as those who say they are talking for it claim, then those who are involved in it have many alternatives. They are the sole ones babbling about it.

For me it isn’t that people are “paid what they are worth” so much as the systemic over-valuation of the work performed. How is it possible, with massive layoffs and downsize–the market awash with employees–that compensation continues to increase? These bankers are the same folks who advise corporate management . . . doesn’t such a practice call into question the validity of the advice? Lastly, could it be that the “bonus pool” is a third lower this year than previously because of “supply” being taken out of the market? That is to say, since Merrill Lynch, Bear Stearn, and Lehman, no longer “exist” the bonus pool dropped because of fewer employees?

The larger government gets, the more it drags down the economy. The only form of government spending that grows the economy is purchases of manufactured goods. It was only massive expenditures on armaments, and agressive marketing of munitions by the Soviet Union that kept it going as long as it did. Without the prop of extensive defense spending, the Soviet economy evaporated. As much as todays left reveres the old Soviet Union, there is a shunning of government purchases of manufactured goods, unless it is imported. Almost as if they are bought off or blackmailed.
